DnDn, Skeanz and Abbedagge join SK Gaming in the LEC
SK Gaming is the LEC team that has made the most roster changes heading into the Summer Split, according to moves reported by Sheep Esports. The trend already started between Winter and Spring, when they swapped out Ismaïl "ISMA" Boualem for Mehdi "Boukada" Lahlou in the jungle, and Cho "Rahel" Min-seong for Tim "Keduii" Willers in the botlane.
Now, SK are going even further with three new changes. Korean toplaner Park "DnDn" Geun-woo replaces Janik "JNX" Bartels, who joined Vitality.Bee in the LFL. In the jungle, Duncan "Skeanz" Marquet comes in from the TCL, taking over for Boukada, who was bought by Team BDS for €200,000. Finally, Felix "Abbedagge" Braun returns to Europe after a short LTA stint and takes over midlane duties from Steven "RKR" Chen. After two ninth-place finishes, SK are reshaping their roster in hopes of reaching the playoffs this Summer.
An entirely new roster
When more than half of the roster changes—especially on the topside with both the jungle and midlane—the cards are completely reshuffled. Only the botlane, with Keduii and Loopy, has any pre-existing synergy, having played together during the last split. Toplaner DnDn arrives from the TCL, where he played for Eternal Fire and had a solid Winter Split that saw the team reach the grand final, before the roster collapsed in Spring and finished last. The team has since disbanded.
In the jungle, negotiations between SK and BDS dragged on and initially seemed unlikely to succeed. After Sheep Esports reported the arrival of the solo laners, the two organizations reached an agreement on Boukada’s transfer fee. SK then turned their attention to finding a new jungler and signed Skeanz, who cost them €15,000 in buyout. In the midlane, Abbedagge returns to Europe after two underwhelming splits with Disguised in LTA North. Loopy is now the only player to have remained with SK throughout the entire season, as every other position has changed at least once.
A tough group
Even with the changes made, it's clear that SK Gaming aren't seen as contenders for the title—or even favorites to reach the playoffs. The LEC groups for Summer have been revealed, and SK will play their regular season against Fnatic, G2 Esports, BDS, and Team Heretics—four teams that, on paper, look significantly stronger and each have at least three or four players who already played together last split, if not all five in the case of G2 and Heretics.
SK will have to defy expectations and pull off so
me upsets if they want a shot at playoffs. Crucially, they’ll need to beat both Heretics and BDS, their most direct competition, as G2 and Fnatic appear much stronger on paper and are widely expected to take the top spots in the group.
