Gilius returns with another familiar face

Erberk "Gilius" Demir is returning to competitive League of Legends—but not as a player. According to sources close to Sheep Esports, the German-Turkish veteran has signed to become the new Head Coach of Anubis Gaming, a rising team from the Arabian League, the ERL representing the MENA region.

This marks Gilius’ first official step into coaching, and also his first time in the MENA region’s competitive ecosystem. While it may be unfamiliar territory for the former LEC jungler, Anubis Gaming are betting on his experience and charisma to bring structure and leadership to a rebuilding project.

Paired with another comeback

The move is notable for several reasons. First, it signals a change of direction for Anubis Gaming, who had a successful 2023 season—winning the Arabian League Summer Split—but struggled to build on that momentum in 2024. While they reached the finals of the 2025 Winter Split, the Egyptian organization was swept 0–3 by Geekay Esports. That loss led to a complete roster rebuild heading into Spring, which ultimately resulted in a disappointing 5th–6th place finish.

Now, the organization is undergoing deeper structural changes. Alongside Gilius’ arrival, Anubis have also hired Ali "Alicus" Saba, an Egyptian esports veteran and the former founder of Misfits Gaming, a team previously in the LEC. Alicus, returning to the competitive scene after six years away, will take on an executive role overseeing both esports and business strategy, with the long-term goal of taking the Anubis brand global. He brings past experience with high-profile organizations such as Cloud9 and OpTic Gaming.

Who is Gilius?

To newer fans of the game, Gilius may known for his outspoken social media presence. But the veteran jungler boasts a decade of experience across the LEC and ERLs. His most iconic moment came in Summer 2020, when he led Schalke 04 through their legendary “miracle run.” After starting 1–10 in the regular season, the team won seven straight games to qualify for the playoffs—a feat few thought possible. Gilius’ clutch performances earned him the nickname “God Gilius,” and helped midlaner Felix "Abbedagge" Braun rise to prominence under the nickname “Fakerdagge.”

While he never lifted an LEC trophy, Gilius was a staple of the league for years, with stints on Schalke 04, Team Vitality, and SK Gaming. He also earned two ERL titles during his time with Schalke’s Prime League roster.

Following a difficult 2022 season with SK Gaming, Gilius stepped away from professional play and gradually faded from the professional players' pool. Now, nearly two years later, he returns in a new role.

Anubis rebuilds with ambition

Anubis Gaming, backed by sponsors like Mercedes-Benz and Vodafone, are serious about competing in the ERL ecosystem. While their Summer Split roster has not yet been finalized, sources say they are actively pursuing promising talent and are currently in contention with reigning champions Geekay Esports over several key players.

The signings of Gilius and Alicus suggest a deeper commitment, not just to improving results in the Arabian League, but to establishing a long-term vision rooted in infrastructure, coaching, and pushing Egypt towards a competitive piece in the EMEA ecosystem.
